Santa Ana is Escazú's warmer, more relaxed neighbor, sometimes called the Valley of the Sun. You get the same west-side hospitals, schools and shopping for noticeably less money, in a town that still feels residential. Traffic into San José can be slow, but most of what you need is right here.

Rohrmoser and Nunciatura are San José's most sought-after residential neighborhoods, with tree-lined boulevards, embassy residences and La Sabana, the city's biggest park, practically at the door. You can walk to restaurants and supermarkets, and the hospitals and Escazú are minutes away. It's city living with a neighborhood feel, and it's priced that way.

Escazú is Costa Rica's best-known address, sometimes called the country's Beverly Hills. Hospital CIMA, Multiplaza, international schools and great restaurants are all close, and the US Embassy is nearby. You can have nearly everything you had back home here, with mountain views thrown in. The catch is the price, and the traffic.

La Guácima is a residential area in western Alajuela that has grown from farmland into a popular spot for gated communities. Families and foreign residents come for bigger lots, horse country and quick access to the airport and San José. It's comfortable and green, but life here mostly happens behind gates and in the car.
